The Folks of Muddy Fork and Other Stories Volume 1 Stanley Mcqueen Valerie Byron 9781481154246 Books Reviews
The Author writes of rural America. The backwoods places and people that were once common, and now are mostly a memory. With his fine storytelling , you feel like you are there, and the people are people you know and respect. Great book. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anybody.
I take this book everywhere with me to read at every opportunity.
The book portrays believable characters that are down-to-earth, enchanting and hilarious.
Mr. Stanley has definitely whet my appetite to read more of his work.
If you try to find Muddy Fork with your GPS then you will strike out. But if you are looking for some great backwoods yarns from the man that has lived them, you're in the ball park. Mr. McQueen's forte for describing these people and places show a rare slice of Americana we seldom see. I highly recommend taking a visit to Muddy Forks. You'll come away with a heartfelt thanks to Stanley for sharing these classic stories with us.
Most writers painstaking labor to establish an authentic "voice", to study and eventually portray their characters in a setting and with speech and idioms they hope strike the reader as authentic.
With this author there is no problem with authenticity; he is the real deal. If you want a slice of life from the deep South, sit back and enjoy writing 'from the gut', by an author who's "been there, done that and is still doing it".
I started reading them and I loved them all so much I couldn't stop! I had to read some of them out loud to myself because of how funny and authentic the narrative is. These are the kind of stories that I'd also recommend to my friends and family - I know my dad is going to love them! The greatest thing about Mcqueen's writing is that it isn't filled with crazy adventures, wild characters, or violence; it's about the real, everyday events that truly matter in life. Each story is filled with wisdom, humor and, more often than not, good ol' fashioned morals.
Muddy Fork, where nearly every house is referred to as a "shack" because...well...they were. These very diverse stories shared with wit, depth and sensitivity are totally fun to read! Mr. McQueen's offering of a glimpse of the realities and concerns of a people and a culture isolated in the backwoods of the Bible Belt before the mechanization of agriculture uproots the whole shebang...before they even know it is a rare glimpse indeed of pure Americana.
While there's lots of humor in the book, some of the stories don't invoke any knee-slapping at all. Given that most of what we think we know about Hillbillies comes from Hollywood portrayals, this is an altogether different "take" of life from that time, those values, ethics, the sensibilities and hilarity of the hill folk. Although Muddy Fork is a fictional town, it is so well researched that the reader can smell the earth and the houses, taste the foods, and feel the reflections. This is an unforgettable trip, don't miss this one.
